Daniel Truett Cathy was born on March 1, 1953, in Jonesboro, Georgia. He is the son of S. Truett Cathy, the founder of Chick-fil-A. Growing up, Dan Cathy was involved in the family business, starting his career in the restaurant industry by doing radio commercials for his father's restaurant.

After graduating from Georgia Southern University with a degree in business administration, Cathy officially joined Chick-fil-A as director of operations.
