Daniel Truett Cathy was born on March 1, 1953, in Jonesboro, Georgia. His father, S. Truett Cathy, had recently started a restaurant called the Dwarf House. Dan grew up in a family deeply involved in the restaurant business, instilling a strong work ethic and passion for hospitality from an early age. He began doing radio commercials for his father's original Dwarf House restaurant in the late 1960s.

Dan Cathy earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Georgia Southern University in 1975. After graduating, he started working full-time for his father's company, which had already begun franchising. He started as director of operations and was promoted to chairman and CEO in 2013. Cathy's leadership was key to Chick-fil-A's growth, including opening numerous restaurants annually and expanding into new markets.
