Early Life
Charles Clarence Butt was born on February 3, 1938, in San Antonio, Texas. He is the grandson of Florence Butt, who founded H-E-B in 1905. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School with a bachelor's degree and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School.
Rise to Success
Butt joined H-E-B Grocery Company in 1963. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming chairman, CEO, and president of the company in 1971. Under his leadership, H-E-B grew into one of the largest privately held companies in the United States. In 2021, Howard Butt III took over as CEO, while Charles Butt remains as chairman.

Charles Butt focused on the growth of the H-E-B brand, innovation, and customer service. He introduced new store concepts, expanded private-label programs, and focused on digital products and services. H-E-B expanded into Mexico during his tenure, with stores in over 150 communities across Texas.
Philanthropy
Butt is known for his philanthropic efforts, donating to various causes, primarily focused on education. He pledged $50 million to the Raising Texas Teachers scholarship fund in 2017. He established The Holdsworth Center in 2017, investing $100 million for Texas public school administrators. He also donated to the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. H-E-B donates 5% of its pre-tax earnings to charitable causes. In 2024, he donated about 75 pieces from his personal art collection to museums in Texas.
