This modest operation producing soaps and margarine laid the foundation for the family's later expansion into the palm oil industry.
Rise to Success
The Karim family's entry into the palm oil sector occurred in 1970, with the establishment of the first palm oil refinery in Indonesia. PT Musim Mas was officially established in 1972 in Medan. Under the guidance of Bachtiar Karim, the company evolved from its roots in soap and oleochemical production into a fully integrated palm oil operation. This integration involved upstream activities like plantations and mills, midstream refining and kernel crushing, and downstream exports of refined oils and derivatives. Musim Mas expanded its operations by starting its plantation in 1988. Burhan Karim, along with his brothers Bachtiar and Bahari, plays a key role in managing Musim Mas.
