Early Life
Brandt Channing Louie was born on July 5, 1943, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. His grandfather, Hok Yat Louie, immigrated to Canada from China and founded H.Y. Louie Co. Limited in 1903. After graduating from the University of British Columbia with a Bachelor of Commerce in 1966, Louie worked as a chartered accountant before joining the family business in 1972.
Rise to Success
Louie's career progressed within H.Y. Louie Co., and he became Chairman and CEO of London Drugs in 1998. Under his leadership, London Drugs grew into one of the largest drugstore chains in Canada. His Vancouver-based holding company, H.Y. Louie, is the third-largest private firm in British Columbia, with estimated revenues of $4.2 billion. He also serves as the Chairman of Grosvenor Americas Board of Directors and oversees the Tong and Geraldine Louie Family Foundation and the London Drugs Foundation.
Key Business Strategies
Louie expanded the chain, which now has over 81 stores in Western Canada. He emphasized authentic leadership and diverse thinking, taking calculated risks. In the 1970s, the company branched into drugstores with the acquisition of London Drugs. In 1999, they ventured into the airline business when they opened London Air Services. Sonora Lodge and Resort was acquired in 2002 and has become a world-class Relais and Chateau property.
Philanthropy
Louie's philanthropic efforts, primarily through the Tong and Geraldine Louie Family Foundation, focus on education, healthcare, the arts, and anti-racism initiatives. The foundations support a wide range of charities, including funding autism support dog training, providing meals-on-wheels for seniors, and supporting math programs for Indigenous youth. He was made a Member of the Order of British Columbia in 2009, inducted into the Canadian Business Hall of Fame in 2012, and appointed to the Order of Canada in 2024.
