Early Life
Anthony J. Wood was born on December 4, 1965, in Manchester, England. His family relocated to the United States when he was young, and he later lived in Georgia, the Netherlands, and Texas. During his childhood, he developed an early aptitude for technology, learning to code computers in high school and building electronics projects. Wood earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University in 1987. While in college, Wood founded his first company, AW Software, to sell computer programs. He also founded SunRize Industries while studying engineering, developing software and hardware for the Amiga.
Rise to Success
Wood's entrepreneurial journey is marked by several successful ventures. After graduating, he founded SunRize version 2. Later, in 1995, Wood launched iBand, which was acquired by Macromedia for $36 million. Wood served as Vice President of Internet Authoring at Macromedia. In 1997, Wood founded ReplayTV, a digital video recorder (DVR) maker, which introduced features like ad-skipping. He sold ReplayTV in 2001 for $42 million. In 2002, Wood founded Roku, Inc., which has become a leader in the streaming industry.

Philanthropy
Anthony Wood, with his wife Susan, established the WoodNext Foundation in 2021. The foundation focuses on various areas, including scientific and biomedical research, mental health, homelessness, education, disaster recovery, and economic opportunity. The foundation has strong ties to Texas and the southern United States, where much of its grant-making targets opportunities. The Foundation has supported the University of Pittsburgh and the American Cancer Society, among other causes.
