Early Life and Education
Andrew H. Tisch was born on August 14, 1949, in New York City. He is the son of Laurence A. Tisch and Wilma Stein Tisch, both of Jewish descent. He attended Suffield Academy and Cornell University, graduating in 1971 with a bachelor's degree. In 1977, he earned an MBA from Harvard University.
Rise to Success
Tisch joined Loews Corporation, the family-controlled conglomerate, in 1971. He progressed through various executive positions, including President of Bulova from 1979 to 1989. In 1990, he became Chairman and CEO of Lorillard Tobacco Company until 1995. Later, he co-chaired Loews Corporation alongside his cousin Jonathan Tisch.
Key Business Strategies
Loews Corporation, under Tisch's leadership, adopted a strategy of diversification, including investments in insurance, energy, and hospitality. Tisch's approach emphasized long-term value creation and conservative financial practices, avoiding excessive debt. Loews expanded into the energy sector, acquiring Diamond M Drilling and Texas Gas Transmission. He oversaw the sale of the movie theater business in 1985. Loews has grown its market capitalization to $21.66 billion as of December 4, 2025.
Philanthropy
Andrew Tisch is active in philanthropic endeavors. He serves on the boards of the Statue of Liberty/Ellis Island Foundation, Wildlife Conservation Society, and the NYC Police Foundation. He co-founded The Young Women's Leadership Network. Tisch and his wife, Ann, have co-endowed a $35 million fund at Cornell University to support faculty excellence. The Andrew and Ann Tisch Foundation made grants of $7,749,720 last year and has total assets of $11,618,439.
