Early Life
Alan Graham Rydge was born on June 24, 1952, and is a highly influential figure in the Australian business community. His career began in 1971 when he joined the Greater Union Organisation (GUO), gaining experience in various operating divisions and cinema exhibition. His family's involvement with GUO dated back to 1937 when his father, Sir Norman Bede Rydge, was appointed Chairman and MD. Alan's early career provided him with a strong foundation in the entertainment industry.
Rise to Success
After the death of his father in 1980, Alan Rydge was appointed Chairman of Amalgamated Holdings Limited (AHL), one of Greater Union's shareholder companies. In 1984, AHL acquired the other half of Greater Union, giving Alan operational control. Under his leadership, the company saw significant cinema expansion and diversification. In 1989, he was elected Chairman of GUO and served as Managing Director from 1986 to 2001. In 2015, the company changed its name from AHL to Event Hospitality and Entertainment.
