Early Life and Education
Alain Taravella was born on May 24, 1948, in Falaise, France. He graduated from HEC Paris in 1971. During his studies, he financed his education by engaging in real estate operations, specifically selling apartments.
Rise to Success
In 1975, Taravella joined the Brémond Group, later known as Pierre & Vacances, where he became head of the leisure division, and eventually CEO in 1985. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Altarea (originally Altarea SA) in 1994, focusing on shopping center development. He strategically acquired land during the early 1990s real estate downturn. A significant milestone was Altarea's IPO in 2004. In 2007, Altarea acquired Cogedim, a move that diversified the company into residential and office property development, forming Altarea Cogedim Group.
Key Business Strategies
Taravella's key strategies include identifying and capitalizing on market downturns, as seen in his land acquisitions in the 1990s. He focused on creating mixed-use urban projects such as Bercy Village, which combines retail and leisure. His leadership also involved expanding Altarea Cogedim's portfolio through strategic acquisitions, including Rue du Commerce in 2011.
Philanthropy
Taravella has been involved in philanthropic initiatives, particularly related to education and social causes. He also lowered rents during the COVID crisis to support commercial tenants, demonstrating his commitment to his business partners and the community.
