Early Life
Yusaku Maezawa was born in Kamagaya, Japan, on November 22, 1975. In his youth, he showed an interest in music and formed a hardcore punk band called Switch Style while in high school. The band released an EP in 1993. After graduating, he chose not to attend college and instead moved to the United States with a girlfriend, where he developed a passion for collecting CDs and records.
Rise to Success
Maezawa's entrepreneurial journey began in 1998 when he founded Start Today. This company started as a mail-order business selling imported albums and CDs. By 2000, Start Today had moved to an online platform and began selling clothing. The company opened the retail clothing website Zozotown in 2004. In 2018, he launched the custom-fit apparel brand Zozo and the at-home measurement system, the Zozosuit, expanding its reach globally. In September 2019, Maezawa resigned as CEO of Zozo after selling a significant stake to SoftBank for $3.7 billion.
