Early Life and Education
William Philip Lauder was born on April 11, 1960, in New York City. He is the son of Leonard A. Lauder and Evelyn H. Lauder, and the grandson of Estée Lauder and Joseph Lauder, the founders of The Estée Lauder Companies. He graduated from Trinity School in New York City in 1978. Lauder attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science in Economics in 1983.
Rise to Success
Lauder joined The Estée Lauder Companies in 1986 as the Regional Marketing Director of Clinique USA. Prior to this, he completed Macy's executive training program in New York City and became Associate Merchandising Manager. He became CEO of Estée Lauder in July 2004, succeeding Fred H. Langhammer. Lauder served as the CEO until 2009. In January 2025, he stepped down as the executive chairman, a position he held since 2009. He now serves as the chairman of Estée Lauder's board of directors.
