William Philip Lauder was born on April 11, 1960, to Evelyn and Leonard Lauder. His heritage includes Hungarian, Czechoslovakian, and Austrian Jewish ancestry. He is the grandson of Estée and Joseph Lauder, founders of The Estée Lauder Companies. Lauder graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 with a bachelor's degree in economics.
