Travis Cordell Kalanick was born in Los Angeles, California, on August 6, 1976. He developed an interest in computers at a young age and learned to code in middle school. Kalanick attended Granada Hills Charter High School and later studied computer engineering and business economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He was a member of the Theta Xi fraternity. In 1998, he dropped out of UCLA to work full-time at Scour Inc., a multimedia search engine.
