Early Life and Education
Thomas Charles Werner was born in New York City on April 12, 1950, to a Jewish family of German origin. He received his education at St. Bernard's School, The Hotchkiss School, and Harvard University, where he graduated in 1971.
Rise to Success
Werner's career began in television in 1973 when he started working for ABC-TV. He quickly ascended the ranks, becoming the Director of East Coast Prime Time Development in 1975 and Senior Vice President of the prime-time development department in 1979. During his time at ABC, Werner was involved in the development of successful shows such as 'Mork & Mindy,' 'Bosom Buddies,' 'Soap,' and 'Taxi'. In 1980, Werner co-founded The Carsey-Werner Company with Marcy Carsey. The company produced a string of successful television series, including 'The Cosby Show,' 'Roseanne,' '3rd Rock from the Sun,' and 'That '70s Show'. In 1996, he was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. Werner transitioned into sports in 1990 when he became part owner of the San Diego Padres. In 2001, Werner joined a group to purchase the Boston Red Sox, and he has served as chairman of the team since February 27, 2002. He became chairman of Liverpool F.C. in 2010.
