Early Life
Thomas Charles Werner was born on April 12, 1950, in New York City, to a Jewish family of German origin. He attended St. Bernard's School, The Hotchkiss School, and later graduated from Harvard University in 1971 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Werner's early interests included film, and he directed a documentary film about Fenway Park during his time at Harvard.
Rise to Success
Werner's career began in the television industry in 1973 when he joined ABC-TV. He quickly rose through the ranks, becoming the Director of East Coast Prime Time Development in 1975, and Senior Vice President of the Prime Time Development department in 1979. In 1980, Werner co-founded The Carsey-Werner Company with Marcy Carsey. As an executive producer, he oversaw the production of numerous hit shows, such as "The Cosby Show," "Roseanne," "3rd Rock from the Sun," and "That '70s Show." Werner's success in television led to his induction into the Television Hall of Fame in 1996.
In 1990, Werner became a part-owner of the San Diego Padres. However, his impact on the sports world grew significantly when he co-founded Fenway Sports Group (FSG) in 2001, formerly known as New England Sports Ventures. In 2002, FSG acquired the Boston Red Sox, with Werner serving as the chairman. Under his leadership, the Red Sox won the World Series in 2004, ending an 86-year championship drought. They went on to win additional titles in 2007, 2013, and 2018.
In 2010, Werner became the chairman of Liverpool F.C. Since then, Liverpool has won the Premier League in 2020 and 2025, the UEFA Champions League in 2019 and the FA Cup in 2022.

Werner is the founding chairman of the Red Sox Foundation. The Red Sox Foundation has donated to over 1,780 organizations. In 2008, Werner helped create the Home Base Program to assist veterans and their families. The foundation supports youth baseball programs in New England. In addition, Werner served on several boards including the Ron Brown Scholars Program, the Crossroads School, and the Board for After School All Stars.
