Early Life
Terry Taylor was born in West Virginia in 1951. His father, Warren Taylor, was a Marine who later owned a Ford dealership in Daytona Beach, Florida. Terry began his career working with his father in the dealership, learning the ropes of the automotive business from a young age. He gained valuable experience in the used car business before venturing out on his own.
Rise to Success
In 1982, Taylor purchased his first new car dealership in Daytona Beach, selling Fords. He recognized the potential for consolidation in the auto retail industry and began acquiring dealerships, often retaining the existing general managers and offering them a stake in the business. This strategy enabled him to build a vast network of dealerships while incentivizing his managers to drive performance. By 1990, Taylor had six dealerships in the Daytona area, and his ambitions continued to grow. Over the years, he expanded his holdings, building a significant presence in the Southeast U.S. and beyond.
Key Business Strategies
A key to Terry Taylor's success has been his focus on acquiring existing dealerships and partnering with the general managers. He offered general managers a minority equity stake, typically around 25%, which incentivized them to increase performance and maintain autonomy. This strategy allowed Taylor to maintain majority ownership while building a strong team of motivated managers. This approach has created a strong partnership model aligning interests and ensuring efficient management across Taylor's sprawling network. His empire, Automotive Management Services Inc. (AMSI), now oversees over 120 dealerships across the U.S..
Philanthropy
While specific details about Terry Taylor's philanthropic activities are difficult to find due to his private nature, it is known that he and his wife, Carla Taylor, made a $3 million commitment to support the Desai Sethi Urology Institute at the Miller School of Medicine.
