Early Life and Education
Sundar Pichai, born Pichai Sundararajan on June 10, 1972, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, grew up in a modest household. His father was an electrical engineer, and his mother was a stenographer. He completed his schooling at Jawahar Vidyalaya Senior Secondary School in Chennai and Vana Vani School at IIT Madras. He earned a bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering from IIT Kharagpur in 1993, graduating with a silver medal. Subsequently, he moved to the United States to pursue a Master of Science in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. He later earned an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Rise to Success
Pichai's career began at Google in 2004, where he quickly rose through the ranks. Initially, he led product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google's client software products. His strategic thinking and leadership were instrumental in the development of Google Chrome, ChromeOS, and Google Drive. He also played a key role in the launch of Gmail, Google Maps, and the open-sourcing of the VP8 video codec, which led to the WebM video format. In 2015, Pichai was appointed CEO of Google and, in 2019, became the CEO of Alphabet Inc.
