Stefano Pessina was born in Pescara, Italy, on June 4, 1941. He spent his childhood in various Italian cities including Milan, Como, and Naples. His early academic interests led him to study nuclear engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan.
Rise to Success
Pessina's business journey began in 1977 when he took over his family's pharmaceutical wholesaler in Naples. He transformed this small business into Alleanza Salute Italia. In 1997, his company merged with UniChem to become Alliance UniChem. From 2001 to 2004, he served as its CEO. He then became the chairman of the company.
In 2006, Alliance UniChem merged with Boots Group PLC. Pessina was the chairman of Alliance Boots from 2007 to 2014. In 2014, Walgreens bought the 55% stake in Alliance Boots, creating Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA). Pessina is currently the Executive Chairman of WBA.
