Samvel Karapetyan was born in Kalinino (now Tashir), Armenia, on August 18, 1965. He graduated from Yerevan Polytechnic Institute in 1986 with a degree in mechanical engineering. In the 1990s, he moved to Russia and entered the business world.

Karapetyan's career began to take shape in 1997 when he became president of Kalugaglavsnab OAO, a logistics company. The year 1999 marked the establishment of the Tashir Group, which quickly expanded into a large conglomerate. The Tashir Group operates in diverse sectors, including real estate, construction, retail, and banking. Karapetyan's wealth grew significantly, and in 2013, he became the richest ethnic Armenian in the world.
