Early Life
Ronald G. Wanek was born in 1941 and raised on a dairy farm in Minnesota. His early life instilled in him a strong work ethic and the value of perseverance. Wanek's grandfather and great uncle built furniture as a hobby, which may have sparked his interest in the industry. The Wanek family did not have electricity or indoor plumbing during his childhood.
Rise to Success
Wanek's career began in 1961 when he started working for Winona Industries, a furniture company. In 1970, he founded Arcadia Furniture with a loan from his father and money from selling his home. He later acquired Ashley Furniture in 1976, transforming it into a major player in the furniture industry. Wanek's vision included establishing overseas manufacturing and distribution, making the company competitive on a global scale. He has been recognized as a pioneer in the furniture industry, introducing innovations such as European flat line construction and polyester finishes.
Key Business Strategies
Wanek's business strategies have been centered on innovation, vertical integration, and a commitment to the customer. He focused on global sourcing, expanding both manufacturing and sales around the world. He also developed the Ashley Furniture HomeStore concept, focusing on middle-income consumers through branded stores. Wanek is known for reinvesting in the business, a strategy he describes with the saying, "Fix the barn before you fix the house".
Philanthropy
Wanek and his wife, Joyce, established the Ronald & Joyce Wanek Foundation in 1998. The foundation supports various causes, including STEM education, medical research, arts, and community development. The foundation has provided millions in scholarships and supports programs aimed at improving healthcare and fostering future leaders. Notably, the Foundation has given a $50 million cornerstone grant to City of Hope for diabetes research.
