Early Life and Education
Rolly van Rappard was born in the Netherlands and comes from a noble family. He holds an MA degree in Economics from Columbia University in New York and an LLM from the University of Utrecht. Prior to his career in private equity, he worked in corporate finance at Citicorp in Amsterdam and London.
Rise to Success
Van Rappard's career took a pivotal turn when he joined Citicorp Venture Capital London in 1989. He was instrumental in the firm's transformation, playing a key role in the 1993 spin-off from Citigroup, which led to the formation of CVC Capital Partners. Under his guidance, CVC expanded globally, managing over €205 billion in assets and with over €243 billion of committed funds. He served as a Managing Partner for almost 15 years before stepping back in 2013 but continues to be actively involved as Chair.
Key Business Strategies
Van Rappard's leadership has been characterized by strategic vision and a focus on identifying and capitalizing on investment opportunities across various sectors. CVC's investments include notable companies such as Petco, Swiss watchmaker Breitling, and Spanish soccer league La Liga. The firm's IPO in 2024 on the Amsterdam stock exchange further solidified his success.
Philanthropy
Van Rappard actively supports several environmental charities, including African Parks Networks, Pristine Seas, Blue Marine Foundation, and the Wildlife Justice Commission, as well as certain landmark cultural institutions in the Netherlands.
