Robert Scott Sands was born in 1958 or 1959. He is the son of Marvin Sands, the founder of Constellation Brands. He graduated from The Harley School in Rochester, New York in 1976. Sands then went on to earn a bachelor's degree in philosophy from Skidmore College. He later attended Pace University, where he earned a Juris Doctor degree.
Rise to Success
Sands began his career in the legal field, working at the Rochester law firm Harter Secrest & Emery LLP. In 1986, he transitioned to the family business, Constellation Brands, as general counsel. He steadily climbed the corporate ladder, becoming CEO in 2007, succeeding his brother Richard Sands. During his tenure as CEO, Constellation Brands experienced substantial growth, expanding its portfolio through strategic acquisitions and becoming a major player in the global beverage market. In 2018, Sands became the Executive Chairman.
Key Business Strategies
Sands is known for a strategic approach that focused on acquisitions. Under his leadership, Constellation Brands acquired numerous companies and brands, including Robert Mondavi wine, Svedka vodka, and the U.S. rights to Grupo Modelo beers, including Corona and Modelo. This strategy significantly increased the company's revenue and market capitalization, transforming it into a global alcohol empire. He is credited with leading the company to become the leading beer supplier in the high-end of the U.S. beer market, increasing net sales by more than 80 percent, and becoming one of the fastest growing consumer packaged goods companies.
Philanthropy
The Sands family has shown a strong commitment to philanthropy. They established the Sands Family Supporting Foundation, which has made significant donations to various causes, including a $61 million donation to the Rochester Area Community Foundation in 2016.
