Richard Alan Kayne was born in 1945 or 1946 in the United States. He grew up on Long Island, New York, in a family that valued education and hard work. Kayne began his professional career in the mid-1960s as an analyst with Loeb, Rhodes & Co. in New York. He then became a principal at Cantor Fitzgerald & Co., managing private accounts, a hedge fund, and a portion of the firm's capital. In 1984, Richard Kayne co-founded Kayne Anderson Capital Advisors with John E. Anderson, which has grown into a major player in the alternative investment space. He also founded Kayne Anderson Rudnick Investment Management around the same time, which he later sold.
