Early Life
Leonard Abess Jr. was born in Miami, Florida, in 1948. He grew up in a Jewish family with strong roots in the city's development. His father, Leonard L. Abess Sr., co-founded North Shore Bank in 1946. The family instilled in him the values of hard work, education, and philanthropy.
Rise to Success
Abess attended the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He began his career at City National Bank of Florida, the successor to his father's bank. He rose through the ranks, becoming Chairman, CEO, and President. Under his leadership, the bank expanded significantly, growing its assets from approximately $400 million to $2.75 billion. In 2008, he sold a majority stake in City National Bank to Caja Madrid for approximately $927 million.

Philanthropy
Abess is a prominent philanthropist. In 2006, he and his wife, Jayne, donated $5 million to the University of Miami to establish the Leonard and Jayne Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy. He also founded the Abess Center for Environmental Studies at Miami Country Day School and the Abess Floating Research Station in the Brazilian Amazon. Abess served as Chairman of the University of Miami's Board of Trustees from 2011-2014.
