Early Life and Education
Jon Winkelried was born around 1959 in Millburn, New Jersey. He is the son of a Jewish father who managed local parking garages, and a mother who was a schoolteacher. Winkelried attended the University of Chicago, where he earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and an MBA. During his time at university, he also played baseball.
Rise to Success
Winkelried began his career with an internship at Goldman Sachs in the equities trading department. He later joined Goldman Sachs's investment banking department. In 1990, he became a partner at Goldman Sachs. He was then made co-head of the fixed-income, currency, and commodities division (FICC) in London. In June 2006, he became co-chief operating officer and co-president with Gary Cohn. Winkelried retired from Goldman Sachs in 2009.

Winkelried's career demonstrates a history of success in the financial industry. His strategic moves, such as taking on leadership roles at Goldman Sachs and later at TPG, have been instrumental in driving growth. Winkelried's leadership at TPG, where he became the sole CEO in 2021, has helped the firm manage over $250 billion in assets.
