Early Life
John L. Morris was born in Springfield, Missouri, in 1948. His upbringing in the Ozarks instilled in him a deep love for fishing and the outdoors, influenced by his parents. He graduated from Glendale High School and attended Drury University, where he studied business, often joking that he "majored in fishing."
Rise to Success
Morris's entrepreneurial journey began in 1972 when he started selling fishing tackle from the back of his father's Brown Derby liquor store. This venture evolved into Bass Pro Shops, which expanded rapidly. Morris's vision included creating immersive retail experiences, incorporating aquariums, waterfalls, and wildlife displays. He also founded the White River Marine Group, a leading manufacturer of fishing boats.
Key Business Strategies
A key strategy was the acquisition of Cabela's in 2017 for $5 billion, significantly increasing Bass Pro Shops' market share. Morris focused on providing a wide range of outdoor recreational merchandise, continually expanding product lines to cater to enthusiasts. His stores became destinations, attracting millions of shoppers annually.
Philanthropy
Morris is a noted conservationist and has invested significantly in conservation efforts, most notably with the Wonders of Wildlife Museum & Aquarium in Springfield, Missouri, which opened in 2017. He was also awarded the Audubon Medal and the Old Tom Morris Award for his contributions to conservation and the sport of golf.
