Early Life and Education
John Liew was born in 1967/1968. Both of his parents were professors, which instilled in him the value of education. Liew attended the University of Chicago, where he earned a B.A. in economics and was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He furthered his education at the same university, obtaining an MBA and a Ph.D. in finance.
Rise to Success
Liew's career started at Trout Trading, developing quantitative market-neutral stock-selection strategies. He then joined Goldman Sachs as a portfolio manager in the asset management division, where he developed and managed quantitative investment strategies. In 1998, he co-founded AQR Capital Management with Cliff Asness, David G. Kabiller, and Robert Krail. AQR became a significant player in the investment world, with $224 billion in assets under management and offices globally. Liew is a Founding Principal at AQR, overseeing research and portfolio management and a member of the firm's Executive Committee.
