Early Life
Joseph Gebbia Jr. was born on August 21, 1981, in Atlanta, Georgia. Growing up, he displayed an entrepreneurial spirit, selling drawings to his classmates. He graduated from Brookwood High School and went on to study at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), earning dual degrees in Graphic Design and Industrial Design in 2005. He supplemented his creative studies with business coursework at Brown University and MIT.
Rise to Success
Gebbia co-founded Airbnb in 2008 with Brian Chesky and Nathan Blecharczyk. The idea originated from their need to pay rent in San Francisco, leading them to rent out air mattresses in their apartment during a conference. The concept quickly evolved into a global platform, connecting hosts and guests worldwide. Gebbia served as the Chief Product Officer and played a key role in shaping Airbnb's design and culture. Samara, an in-house design studio focused on user-centric solutions, was also founded by him.
Key Business Strategies
Gebbia focused on user experience and design to drive Airbnb's success. He prioritized creating a trustworthy and user-friendly platform that would appeal to both hosts and guests. The company expanded its offerings and reached nearly 7 million listings in over 220 countries. Gebbia's other venture, Samara, focuses on creating factory-made homes.
Philanthropy
Gebbia is committed to philanthropy. He is a signatory to the Giving Pledge and has made significant donations to various causes, including The Ocean Cleanup, and programs combating homelessness.
