Early Life
Jimmy John Liautaud was born on January 12, 1964, in Arlington Heights, Illinois. He was the second of four children. His mother, Gina, was a Lithuanian immigrant and an elementary school teacher, and his father, James P. Liautaud, was an entrepreneur. The family faced financial challenges, with his father's businesses experiencing setbacks. Liautaud attended Elgin Academy, a private prep school, but struggled to fit in. He graduated second to last in his high school class and did not attend college.
Rise to Success
Liautaud's entrepreneurial journey began in 1983 when he borrowed $25,000 from his father to start a sandwich shop. He initially considered a hot dog stand but opted for sandwiches. He opened the first Jimmy John's in Charleston, Illinois. The business quickly grew, and within ten years, franchising began in 1993.
Key Business Strategies
Jimmy John's focused on fast service and high-quality ingredients. Liautaud emphasized hard work, working long hours himself, and encouraging the same from his team. He developed a franchise model that contributed to rapid expansion.

Liautaud, along with his wife Leslie, formed the Liautaud Family Foundation in 2017. The foundation supports various causes, including the military, education, and wellness. The Liautauds have supported organizations such as the Mayo Clinic, Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, and the American Heart Association.
