Early Life and Education
James G. Coulter, known as Jim Coulter, was born on December 1, 1959, in Buffalo, New York. Raised in Medford, New Jersey, he came from a Methodist family and displayed academic excellence from an early age. Coulter attended Shawnee High School and later graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his education by earning an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1986, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar.
Rise to Success
Coulter's career took off after his MBA, starting with roles at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb and the Robert M. Bass Group. In 1992, he co-founded TPG Capital (originally Texas Pacific Group) with David Bonderman. Under Coulter's leadership, TPG became a leading private equity firm, known for significant investments and leveraged buyout transactions. He has been involved in major deals, including the takeover of Continental Airlines in 1993. In 2021, Coulter became the Executive Chair of TPG.

Coulter's strategic approach has been central to TPG's success. He focused on identifying and investing in companies across diverse sectors, from airlines and retail to technology. A key strategy involved leveraged buyouts, using debt to acquire companies with the potential for operational improvements and increased value. Coulter is also managing partner of TPG Rise Climate and co-managing partner of The Rise Funds, an impact investing arm.
