James G. Coulter was born on December 1, 1959, in Medford, New Jersey. He was raised in a Methodist family. He graduated summa cum laude from Dartmouth College and received his MBA from Stanford Graduate School of Business in 1986, where he was named an Arjay Miller Scholar.
Rise to Success
Coulter's career began at Lehman Brothers Kuhn Loeb. In 1992, Coulter co-founded TPG Capital (originally Texas Pacific Group) with David Bonderman. TPG has become one of the largest private equity firms globally. In 2020, he was ranked No. 359 on the Forbes 400 list. Coulter has been involved in major leveraged buyout transactions, including Continental Airlines in 1993. He also led TPG's investments in various companies, including Burger King, Del Monte Foods, J. Crew, and Seagate Technology.
