Hua Shen, a US citizen, was born in China. After earning a master's degree at Donghua University in China, he pursued further education in the United States. Shen received a Master of Science degree from Yale University in 1992 and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in 1995.
