Early Life and Education
Henry Samueli was born on September 20, 1954, in Buffalo, New York. His parents, Sala and Aron, were Polish-Jewish immigrants who survived the Holocaust. Samueli attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he earned a Bachelor's, Master's, and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. He graduated with his Ph.D. in 1980.
Rise to Success
In 1991, while working as a professor at UCLA, Samueli co-founded Broadcom Corporation with Henry Nicholas. The company developed semiconductor technology for the broadband communications market. Broadcom went public in 1998, and Samueli became a billionaire. The company's innovations propelled it to a leading position in the industry. Samueli is currently the chairman of Broadcom Inc. His contributions to the semiconductor industry have been significant, establishing him as a prominent figure in the technology sector.
Key Business Strategies
Broadcom's success is attributed to its focus on developing cutting-edge semiconductor solutions and strategic acquisitions. Samueli's vision and technical expertise were crucial in establishing Broadcom as a leader in the industry. Broadcom expanded rapidly through strategic acquisitions, which included CA Technologies and Symantec's enterprise security business. These moves broadened Broadcom's reach in the software and cybersecurity markets.
Philanthropy
The Samuelis established the Samueli Foundation after Broadcom went public. The foundation focuses its giving on education, health, youth services, and Jewish culture. They have committed over $500 million to philanthropic causes. In 1999, they made significant donations to the UCLA School of Engineering and Applied Science and the UC Irvine School of Engineering, which have since been named after him. They are also members of the Giving Pledge, initiated by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates.
