Dwight Schar, born in Ohio, began his career in homebuilding after starting as a teacher. He quickly rose through the ranks, managing Mid-Atlantic operations for Ryan Homes.

Rise to Success

In 1980, Schar founded Northern Virginia Land and Homes Co., which would later become NVR. Under his leadership, NVR grew rapidly, acquiring Ryan Homes in 1987. This acquisition established NVR as a major player in the homebuilding industry. NVR expanded into mortgage services in 1984 and went public in 1986.
