Early Life
Djoko Susanto, born Kwok Kwie Fo on February 9, 1950, in Jakarta, Indonesia, is the sixth of ten siblings. He faced initial challenges in his education due to a government policy, which led him to drop out of school after first grade. He later changed his name and began managing his parents' food stall in Pasar Arjuna at the age of 17.
Rise to Success
Susanto's entrepreneurial journey began with the sale of groceries and, later, cigarettes, attracting the attention of clove cigarette tycoon Putera Sampoerna. In 1985, they collaborated to establish a chain of discount supermarkets. The partnership culminated in the establishment of Alfa Minimart (later Alfamart) in 1994, aimed at providing affordable and convenient shopping options. After Sampoerna sold his tobacco business, including his share in Alfamart, to Philip Morris in 2005, Susanto acquired the retail division. He then developed the retail business into a large retail chain. This strategic move allowed him to expand his business significantly.
Key Business Strategies
A key factor in Alfamart's success was its focus on offering affordable, high-quality products in convenient locations. Djoko Susanto understood the needs of Indonesia's growing middle class. Alfamart strategically located its stores, provided essential goods, and implemented customer loyalty programs. The company has expanded with various brands like Alfa Express, Alfa Midi, and Lawson, catering to diverse consumer needs.
Philanthropy
In June 2022, Alfamart invested $30 million in Bank Aladin Syariah, which offers financial services based on Islamic principles. Djoko has been involved in various community initiatives, though specific amounts are not readily available from the search results.
