Early Life and Education
Anne Dinning, a native of Seattle, demonstrated an early aptitude for academics, which led her to pursue computer science. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Washington in 1984. Dinning furthered her education at New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, where she received a Ph.D. in computer science.
Rise to Success
Dinning's career trajectory took a significant turn in 1990 when she joined the D.E. Shaw group. Initially, she was involved in building computer algorithms for the firm's Equity Arbitrage trading unit. By 1995, she had risen to the position of managing director, overseeing the firm's worldwide asset management activities. Dinning's leadership was instrumental in D.E. Shaw's growth, helping it become a leading quantitative investment firm. She was also a member of the Executive Committee and the Risk Committee. Dinning's contributions have helped the firm grow to manage approximately $65 billion in assets.
Key Business Strategies
Dinning played a key role in developing many of D.E. Shaw's investment capabilities and led various investment strategies, including those in energy, benchmark-relative equities and long-short equities. Her expertise was integral to the formation of D. E. Shaw Investment Management, L.L.C. (DESIM), which focuses on benchmark-relative equity and multi-asset class investment strategies. Dinning has also been instrumental in the strategic decisions of the firm, contributing to its culture and success in the quantitative finance industry.
Philanthropy
Dinning's commitment extends to philanthropy. She has donated more than $300 million to her Corabelle Lumps Foundation, which supports Partners in Health and the Robin Hood Foundation.
