Early Life and Education
Anne Dinning was born in Seattle, Washington. She demonstrated a strong aptitude for academics early in life. Dinning pursued a Bachelor of Science degree in computer science from the University of Washington in 1984. She furthered her education by earning a Ph.D. in computer science from New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. During her time at NYU, she won the Howard Grad Memorial Award for Outstanding Ph.D. Candidate.

Dinning's career took off when she joined the D.E. Shaw group in 1990. The firm was one of the first to use mathematical models to invest in the markets in a systematic way. She began doing quantitative research in global stock markets. Dinning quickly rose within D.E. Shaw and became a managing director, playing a key role in the firm's growth. She was also on the executive committee. Today, D.E. Shaw is a leading quantitative investment firm, managing approximately $65 billion.
