Alexander Leonidovich Mamut was born on January 29, 1960, in Moscow, into a Jewish family of lawyers. He graduated from Moscow State University's Faculty of Law in 1982. His upbringing in a legal and academic environment influenced his career path, leading him to law and then into the business world during the post-Soviet era.

Rise to Success

Mamut's career started as a legal advisor, then he co-founded the Business and Cooperation Bank in 1990, later renamed Imperial Bank. He served as the Chairman of MDM Bank from 1999 to 2002. Mamut was also involved in various investment ventures, including Troika Dialog, and acquired stakes in companies like Euroset and Seventh Continent. He made substantial investments in media, acquiring and leading Rambler & Co, and also made international investments, including the British bookstore chain Waterstones.
