Early Life
Abel Avellan was born in Venezuela, where he studied engineering at Simón Bolívar University. He began his career in the satellite communications industry, gaining expertise in global connectivity and network infrastructure.
Rise to Success
In 2000, Avellan founded Emerging Markets Communications (EMC) with $50,000 and a pregnant wife. The company provided satellite communication services in Africa and the Middle East. EMC grew to become one of the leading satellite service providers. In 2016, Avellan sold EMC for $550 million. Building on this experience, Avellan founded AST SpaceMobile in 2017. The company aims to provide broadband services directly to standard mobile phones from space-based satellites. He has led AST SpaceMobile in securing partnerships with major telecommunications companies and raising significant capital.
Key Business Strategies
Avellan's key business strategy revolves around creating a space-based cellular broadband network. This strategy involves deploying satellites to provide direct-to-phone connectivity, eliminating the need for specialized equipment. AST SpaceMobile plans to launch 60 satellites by the end of 2026 to achieve global coverage, which will keep cellphones connected when out of range of a tower.
Philanthropy
Avellan's commitment to connectivity aligns with philanthropic goals, as evidenced by his appointment as a Commissioner to the ITU/UNESCO Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development. He believes in bridging the digital divide and making connectivity a necessity for all.
