Early Life
William Patrick Foley II was born on December 29, 1944, in Austin, Texas, and spent part of his childhood in Ottawa, Ontario. He developed a passion for ice hockey early in life. He attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, where he earned a B.S. in 1967. While at West Point, he made significant earnings in the stock market.
Rise to Success
Foley began his career in the U.S. Air Force, where he negotiated defense contracts. Later, he earned a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law in 1974. His business acumen led him to revitalize the title insurance firm Fidelity National Financial, which he purchased in 1984 and grew through acquisitions. Under his leadership, Fidelity National Financial became the largest title insurer in the country. Foley also invested in various sectors, including wineries, golf courses, and restaurants.

Foley's strategy emphasized customer focus and strategic acquisitions. He expanded Fidelity National Financial through numerous acquisitions and effective operational management. He also capitalized on the SPAC boom, sponsoring multiple blank-check companies. Foley's leadership extends to sports, as the lead investor, chairman, and CEO of the Vegas Golden Knights NHL team, which won the Stanley Cup in 2023.
