Early Life
Tony Xu was born in Nanjing, China, and immigrated to the United States with his parents when he was four. His mother was a doctor, and his father was a professor. Growing up, Xu worked at his mother's restaurant. This experience gave him a clear understanding of the challenges faced by small business owners, which later influenced his entrepreneurial journey.
Rise to Success
Xu co-founded DoorDash in 2013 with Andy Fang, Stanley Tang, and Evan Moore while attending Stanford University. Initially, they delivered food themselves to better understand the business. DoorDash quickly grew, expanding to various cities and eventually becoming the largest food delivery service in the United States. The IPO in 2020 made Xu a billionaire.
Key Business Strategies
Xu focused on solving real-world problems and building a software-enabled logistics company. He emphasized a customer-centric approach, focusing on the needs of both merchants and consumers. DoorDash's early success came from focusing on the underserved needs of local businesses. His leadership style includes a focus on long-term vision, recruiting top talent, and fostering a strong company culture.
