Early Life and Education
Stephen Frank Mandel Jr. was born on March 12, 1956, in Darien, Connecticut. He graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy in 1974 and then attended Dartmouth College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in government in 1978. He furthered his education at Harvard Business School, receiving an MBA in 1982.
Rise to Success
Mandel began his career as a senior consultant at Mars & Co from 1982 to 1984. He then worked as a consumer-retail analyst at Goldman Sachs from 1984 to 1990. Subsequently, he became a consumer analyst and managing director at Tiger Management under Julian Robertson. In 1997, Mandel founded Lone Pine Capital, a hedge fund management company based in Greenwich, Connecticut.
