Early Life and Education
Stephen Frank Mandel Jr. was born on March 12, 1956, and grew up in Darien, Connecticut. He attended Phillips Exeter Academy and graduated in 1974. He then pursued a Bachelor of Arts in government at Dartmouth College, graduating in 1978, and was a member of the Psi Upsilon fraternity. Mandel later earned an MBA from Harvard University.
Rise to Success
Mandel began his career as a senior consultant at Mars & Co from 1982 to 1984. He then worked at Goldman Sachs as a consumer-retail analyst from 1984 to 1990. Before founding his own firm, he worked at Tiger Management, where he became a consumer analyst and managing director under Julian Robertson. In 1997, with the backing of Robertson, Mandel founded Lone Pine Capital, a hedge fund specializing in technology-focused investments. Forbes recognized Mandel as one of the highest-earning hedge fund managers in 2012, 2013, and 2018.
