Early Life and Education
Reid Garrett Hoffman was born on August 5, 1967, in Palo Alto, California. Growing up in Berkeley, California, he developed a passion for tabletop roleplaying games. He attended Putney School in Vermont, where he engaged in farming. Hoffman later graduated from Stanford University in 1990 with a Bachelor of Science in Symbolic Systems and Cognitive Science. His academic achievements earned him a Marshall Scholarship for graduate study abroad. He pursued a Master of Studies in Philosophy at Wolfson College, Oxford, which he completed in 1993.
Rise to Success
Hoffman's career began with a role at Apple Computer in 1994. Later, he co-founded SocialNet.com in 1997, an early social networking site. His significant breakthrough came with PayPal, where he served on the board of directors during its founding. He joined PayPal full-time as Chief Operating Officer (COO) in January 2000. Hoffman co-founded LinkedIn in December 2002, launching it on May 5, 2003. The platform quickly became a prominent hub for professional networking.
