Early Life
Randolph David Lerner was born on February 21, 1962, in Brooklyn, New York. He comes from a Jewish family. He graduated from Columbia University in 1984, and spent a year at Clare College, Cambridge in 1983. He later earned a law degree from Columbia Law School. Lerner started his career as an investment analyst at Progressive Corporation.
Rise to Success
Lerner's father, Alfred Lerner, founded Securities Advisors, Inc. (SAI), an investment firm, in 1991. Randolph Lerner became a director there. In 1993, Lerner became a director at MBNA Corporation, and after his father's death in 2002, he became the chairman. MBNA was later acquired by Bank of America in 2006 for $35 billion. Lerner took over ownership of the Cleveland Browns (NFL) after his father's death in 2002, selling the team in 2012. He acquired Aston Villa F.C. in 2006 and sold it in 2016.
Key Business Strategies
Lerner's business strategy was significantly influenced by his father, who built a fortune in the credit card industry. His involvement with MBNA and subsequent sale to Bank of America demonstrated a keen understanding of financial markets. His approach to sports team ownership, while not always successful on the field, reflected a business acumen focused on investment and potential returns. Lerner’s sale of Aston Villa demonstrates his willingness to exit ventures that do not meet his financial expectations.
Philanthropy
Lerner has engaged in several philanthropic endeavors. He has supported the UK's National Portrait Gallery since 2002, including a £5 million donation in 2008. He has also supported local children's hospices through Aston Villa and is a major benefactor to Clare College, Cambridge.
