Early Life and Education
Mark Jonathan Pincus was born in Chicago, Illinois, on February 13, 1966. Raised in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood, he is the son of Donna and Theodore Pincus. His father worked as a business columnist and public relations advisor, and his mother was an architect. Pincus attended Francis W. Parker School from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1984. He pursued higher education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1988. Pincus furthered his education at Harvard Business School, where he earned his MBA in 1993.
Rise to Success
Before becoming an entrepreneur, Pincus spent six years in venture capital and financial services, working as a financial analyst at Lazard Freres & Co. and as a Vice President for Asian Capital Partners in Hong Kong. In 1995, Pincus co-founded Freeloader, Inc., and in 1997, he started Support.com, which became a leading provider of help desk automation software. In 2003, Pincus founded Tribe.net, an early social network. His pivotal move was the founding of Zynga in April 2007. The company quickly became a pioneer in social gaming, with games like FarmVille and Words with Friends. Zynga went public in December 2011, and within four years of its founding, it became a billion-dollar company. Pincus served as Zynga's CEO until July 2013, and again from 2015 to 2016.

Pincus's business strategy has always focused on innovation and capitalizing on emerging trends in the digital landscape. At Zynga, he implemented free-to-play models, in-app purchases, and social networking integration to drive revenue and user engagement. He was an early investor in several tech giants, including Facebook and Twitter. Pincus's vision for Zynga was to make gaming a mass market activity. By 2020, Zynga had a record revenue of $503 million. In 2022, Take-Two Interactive acquired Zynga for $12.7 billion.
