Early Life and Education
Mark Jonathan Pincus was born on February 13, 1966, in Chicago, Illinois. He was raised in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Chicago and comes from a Jewish background. His parents were Donna (née Forman), an artist and architect, and Theodore Pincus, a business columnist and PR advisor. Pincus attended Francis W. Parker School from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1984. He pursued higher education at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics in 1988. Later, he earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1993.
Rise to Success
Before becoming an entrepreneur, Pincus spent six years in venture capital and financial services, working as an analyst at Lazard Freres & Co. and as a Vice President for Asian Capital Partners in Hong Kong. His entrepreneurial journey began with Freeloader, Inc., in 1995, and then Support.com in 1997. In 2003, he founded Tribe.net. His most significant venture, Zynga, was founded in July 2007. Zynga developed popular social games like FarmVille and Words with Friends. Pincus served as CEO of Zynga until July 2013, and then again from 2015 to 2016, and as Executive Chairman of the Board since March 2016.
Key Business Strategies
Pincus's strategy involved creating games on social networking platforms, particularly Facebook. Zynga's success was driven by a focus on social interaction and engaging gameplay. He invested early in tech companies such as Facebook and Twitter. In 2018, he co-founded Reinvent Capital, an investment firm. He has also launched several SPACs.
Philanthropy
Pincus has been involved in philanthropy through Zynga.org, which raised over $20 million for nonprofits. He has also supported various causes, including COVID-19 relief and diversity and inclusion initiatives. He joined The Giving Pledge in 2022, committing to donate a majority of his wealth.
