Early Life and Education
Mark Jonathan Pincus was born on February 13, 1966, in Chicago, Illinois. He is the son of Donna (née Forman) and Theodore Pincus. His father was a business columnist and public relations advisor to CEOs and politicians, and his mother was an artist and architect. Pincus attended Francis W. Parker School from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1984. He then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1988. Pincus furthered his education at Harvard Business School, where he graduated in 1993 and co-founded the Communications Club with Sherry Coutu.
Rise to Success
Pincus started his career in venture capital and financial services for six years before becoming an entrepreneur. In 1995, he co-founded Freeloader, Inc. From 1996 to 1997, he served as Chief Executive Officer of FreeLoader, Inc., a web-based news company he co-founded. In 2003, at age 37, Pincus founded his third startup, Tribe.net, an early social network. In 2007, he founded Zynga, a mobile social gaming company that went public in 2011 with a $1 billion initial public offering. Zynga's most popular games include FarmVille and Words with Friends.
Key Business Strategies
Pincus's strategies included identifying emerging trends, particularly in the gaming and social media sectors, and developing free-to-play games. Zynga's revenue model relied on in-app purchases and in-game advertising. Pincus also focused on acquiring other companies to expand Zynga's portfolio and reach. Zynga's acquisition of Take-Two Interactive in 2022 for $12.7 billion highlights the value of Zynga's mobile titles.
Philanthropy
Pincus is dedicated to philanthropy. He started Zynga.org in October 2009, which has raised over $20 million for international nonprofits. In June 2020, Zynga created a $25 million fund to invest in charitable causes and educational organizations that promote diversity and inclusion.
