James Si-Cheng Chao was born on December 29, 1927, in Malu village, Jiading County, Shanghai, China. Growing up in a rural farming village, he experienced the challenges of a country marked by political instability and war. His parents, farmers and educators, instilled in him the importance of education, sacrificing to provide him with opportunities for schooling. Chao excelled academically and was a popular student leader.
Rise to Success
Chao's career began with navigation studies and a stint at sea. After completing his education, he served as a sea captain. He then founded the Foremost Group in 1964, a global shipping, trading, and finance company based in New York. Chao has been a pioneer in incorporating environmentally friendly designs and technology into his company's fleet.
