Early Life and Education
Henry Thompson Nicholas III was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1959. After his parents divorced, he moved with his mother and sister to Los Angeles, California. Despite facing challenges with dyslexia, Nicholas persevered and excelled academically. He graduated from UCLA School of Engineering in 1982 with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, followed by a master's degree in 1985 and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering in 1998.
Rise to Success
Nicholas began his career at TRW in Redondo Beach, California, where he met his future business partner, Henry Samueli. In 1991, Nicholas co-founded Broadcom Corporation with Samueli. Broadcom focused on developing semiconductor solutions for broadband communications. Under Nicholas's leadership, Broadcom experienced rapid growth, going public in 1998. The company's success made Nicholas a billionaire. He resigned as CEO in 2003.
Key Business Strategies
Broadcom's success was driven by Nicholas's ability to identify emerging trends in broadband technology and create custom chips for cable modems and digital subscriber lines (DSL). The company expanded its portfolio to include Wi-Fi chips, Bluetooth chips, and network processors, becoming a key supplier to tech giants.
Philanthropy
Nicholas is actively involved in philanthropy. In 2003, he and his wife founded the Henry T. and Stacey Nicholas Foundation, which later became The Henry T. Nicholas III Foundation. The foundation supports education, medical research, and victims' rights. Nicholas is also a principal benefactor of the Nicholas Academic Centers, which he co-founded in 2008 to provide academic support to under-resourced high school students. He is also focused on passing a crime victims' rights bill known as Marsy's Law.
