Early Life and Education
Hamilton Evans "Tony" James was born on February 3, 1951, in Wyandotte, Michigan. He is the son of Hamilton Renson James and Waleska James. He attended the Choate School and later graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College in 1973. He earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975.
Rise to Success
James began his career in investment banking at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ) in 1975, becoming head of the global mergers and acquisitions group in 1982. In 1985, he founded DLJ Merchant Banking, Inc. He then joined Blackstone in 2002, playing a pivotal role in the company's growth as President and Chief Operating Officer. He was instrumental in Blackstone's IPO and expansion, helping to grow the company to $731 billion in assets. He has served as chairman of Costco since August 2017.

Key strategies include focusing on investments, strategic mergers and acquisitions, and expanding assets under management. During his tenure at Blackstone, the firm grew significantly, achieving a substantial presence in the global market.
