Early Life
Brian Armstrong was born on January 25, 1983, near San Jose, California. Both of his parents were engineers, and he displayed an early aptitude for technology, learning Java and CSS in high school. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory before enrolling at Rice University, where he earned dual bachelor's degrees in economics and computer science in 2005, followed by a master's in computer science in 2006. During his university years, he started a business matching tutors to students.
Rise to Success
Armstrong's career began with roles at IBM and Deloitte. His interest in cryptocurrencies sparked when he encountered the Bitcoin white paper in 2010. In 2011, he worked as a software engineer at Airbnb, where he observed the inefficiencies of international payment systems, inspiring him to explore solutions using cryptocurrencies. In 2012, he co-founded Coinbase with Fred Ehrsam. Coinbase, under Armstrong's leadership as CEO, became a leading platform for trading cryptocurrencies. Coinbase went public in April 2021, with a direct listing on the Nasdaq. Armstrong owns approximately 19% of Coinbase's shares.
