Early Life and Education
Brian Armstrong was born on January 25, 1983, in San Jose, California. Both of his parents were engineers. He attended Bellarmine College Preparatory and later earned dual bachelor's degrees in economics and computer science from Rice University in 2005. He continued his studies at Rice, completing a master's degree in computer science in 2006. While at Rice, he started a tutoring business.
Rise to Success
Armstrong's early career included roles at IBM and Deloitte before joining Airbnb as a software engineer in 2011. His experiences at Airbnb, particularly the complexities of international payments, sparked his interest in cryptocurrencies. Recognizing the potential of Bitcoin, he co-founded Coinbase in 2012 with Fred Ehrsam. The company, which allows users to buy, sell, and store cryptocurrencies, grew rapidly. Coinbase went public in April 2021 via a direct listing on the Nasdaq.
