Zhang Lei was born in 1972 in Zhumadian, Henan province, China. He came from a modest background. He excelled academically, earning a scholarship to Renmin University of China, where he received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1994.
Rise to Success
In 1999, Zhang took a class taught by David F. Swensen, who was the chief investment officer of the Yale Endowment. Swensen became a mentor to Zhang, leading to Zhang interning at the Yale Endowment, his first position in finance. He later earned an MBA and a Master of Arts in International Relations from Yale University in 2002. In 2005, Zhang founded Hillhouse Investment, with $20 million in seed capital from the Yale University endowment fund. Under Zhang's leadership, Hillhouse has grown into a global investment firm managing billions of dollars in assets.
