Early Life
V. Prem Watsa was born in Hyderabad, India. He excelled in academics and attended the Indian Institute of Technology Madras, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering in 1971. He later pursued an MBA at the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario.
Rise to Success
Watsa began his career in the insurance industry, working at Confederation Life Insurance. In 1984, he founded Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel Ltd.. A year later, in 1985, he took control of a small Canadian trucking insurance company, Markel Financial, which was on the verge of bankruptcy. He renamed it Fairfax Financial Holdings, a name derived from his investment principles of "fair and friendly acquisitions". Under Watsa's leadership, Fairfax grew into a significant financial holding company with operations in property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, and investment management.
Key Business Strategies
Watsa's investment strategy is characterized by a long-term, value-oriented approach, often compared to that of Warren Buffett. This approach involves disciplined underwriting and value-oriented investing. Fairfax focuses on acquiring companies at reasonable prices and holding them for the long term. Key to his strategy is a decentralized operational structure, which gives subsidiary presidents significant autonomy.
Philanthropy
Watsa is involved in various philanthropic initiatives, including serving on the board of trustees for the Hospital for Sick Children and as chairman of its investment committee. He is also involved with the Richard Ivey School of Business and the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation.
