Early Life and Education
V. Prem Watsa was born in Hyderabad, India, in 1950. His father was a teacher, and Watsa excelled in school, enjoying sports and chess. He graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras with a degree in chemical engineering in 1971. Despite his degree, Watsa developed a keen interest in business.
Rise to Success
Watsa moved to Canada and earned an MBA from the Richard Ivey School of Business at the University of Western Ontario. His career began at Confederation Life Insurance Company in 1974, where he managed stock portfolios. In 1984, he founded Hamblin Watsa Investment Counsel. The following year, Watsa took over Markel Financial, a struggling trucking insurance firm, and renamed it Fairfax Financial Holdings. Under Watsa's leadership, Fairfax grew into a major financial holding company, with a focus on value investing. The company now has property and casualty insurance and reinsurance interests across the world plus stakes in companies including BlackBerry and GE.

He is a member of the Board of Trustees of The Hospital for Sick Children, a member of the Advisory Board for the Richard Ivey School of Business, a member of the Board of Directors of the Royal Ontario Museum Foundation, and Chairman of the Investment Committee of St. Paul's Anglican Church.
