Sjamsul Nursalim, born on January 19, 1942, in Lampung, Indonesia, grew up in a family of traders. His father established a rubber milling factory in Teluk Betung, which exposed Sjamsul to the world of business from a young age. Sjamsul's career began with the founding of NV Hok Thay Hin, a bicycle tire and inner tube production company. His business acumen led to the transformation of the company into PT Gajah Tunggal Tbk, which later became a major player in the tire industry. Under his leadership, Gajah Tunggal became the largest integrated tire producer in Southeast Asia. Sjamsul expanded production, diversifying into motorcycle tires in 1971 and bias tires for passenger and commercial vehicles in 1981. In the early 1990s, the company began producing radial tires for passenger cars and light trucks. Sjamsul also holds stakes in other enterprises, including the retailer Mitra Adiperkasa, which operates numerous well-known brands in Indonesia. He has also invested in property through Tuan Sing Holdings, which is listed in Singapore.
