Early Life
Johannes "Jannie" Mouton was born in Carnarvon, South Africa, in 1946. He obtained a BCom Honours degree from the University of Stellenbosch and qualified as a chartered accountant in 1973.
Rise to Success
Mouton's career began in accounting, which paved the way for his entrepreneurial ventures. In 1982, he co-founded the stockbroking firm Senekal, Mouton & Kitshoff. However, he was fired in 1995 due to differing strategic visions. Undeterred, Mouton co-founded PSG Group in November 1995 with Chris Otto. They initially acquired a majority stake in a recruitment firm, PAG, and later transformed it into PSG Group, an investment holding company.
Key Business Strategies
PSG Group's strategy involved identifying undervalued assets and focusing on long-term value creation. The company invested in companies with uncomplicated business models and strong growth prospects, building successful businesses in financial services, banking, private equity, agriculture, and education. Mouton's leadership and vision were instrumental in the growth of PSG Group and its diverse portfolio, including Capitec Bank, Curro Holdings, and PSG Konsult.
Philanthropy
In 2016, Jannie Mouton donated R50 million for the Jan Mouton Centre of Learning at Stellenbosch University. In 2017, he founded the Jannie Mouton Stigting (foundation) with 10.5 million PSG shares, which have provided over R100 million in dividends to support numerous welfare organizations. In 2025, the foundation announced a plan to repurpose R7.2 billion to buy out shareholders of the private school group Curro, aiming to provide quality education to disadvantaged children.
