Early Life
Johannes "Jannie" Mouton was born in Carnarvon, South Africa, in 1946. He attended Stellenbosch University, where he earned a degree and laid the foundation for his career.
Rise to Success
Mouton's career began at PwC, where he became a chartered accountant in 1973. In 1982, he co-founded Senekal, Mouton & Kitshoff. In 1995, after being fired from Senekal, Mouton founded PSG Group with Chris Otto. PSG Group became a significant investment holding company with interests in financial services, banking, private equity, agriculture, and education. The company has contributed to building successful businesses such as Capitec Bank, PSG Konsult (now PSG Financial Services), Curro, and Stadio.
Key Business Strategies
Mouton's business acumen is evident in his strategic investments and focus on creating shareholder value. PSG Group's model evolved to resemble an investment holding company, incubating and building businesses. Mouton's ability to identify and invest in undervalued assets has been a key to his success. He has also expanded into various sectors, including financial services, education, and agribusiness.
Philanthropy
Mouton is involved in philanthropic endeavors through the Jannie Mouton Foundation. The foundation supports projects in education and entrepreneurship and has pledged R7.2 billion to purchase Curro Holdings. Mouton's philanthropy reflects his belief in giving back to the community and contributing to South Africa's future. Mouton's approach mirrors Warren Buffett's emphasis on "philanthropy as a capital allocation decision."
