Early Life and Education
James Gerard Dinan was born in Baltimore, Maryland, in 1959. He graduated from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in economics in 1981 and earned an MBA from Harvard University in 1985.
Rise to Success
Dinan's career began at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ). He later worked at Kellner DiLeo & Company, a merger arbitrage firm. In 1991, Dinan founded York Capital Management with $3.6 million raised from former colleagues. The fund achieved significant returns, including a 33.8% return in 1993. By 2018, York Capital Management had over $20 billion in assets under management. Dinan sold a 33% stake in York Capital to Credit Suisse in 2010. He is also known for his partial ownership of the NBA's Milwaukee Bucks, which he acquired a stake in 2014. He stopped serving as chairman of York Capital in late 2023 and now manages his family office.
