Early Life
Graeme Richard Hart was born in Auckland, New Zealand, in 1955. He did not come from a wealthy background. Hart attended Mount Roskill Grammar School. He left school at 16, embarking on a career as a tow-truck driver and panel beater. This early experience instilled in him a strong work ethic and an understanding of the value of hard work.
Rise to Success
Hart's journey into the business world began with an MBA from the University of Otago in 1987. His thesis focused on expansion strategies. He gained significant experience when he purchased the Government Printing Office. Hart's success in the packaging industry is notable. Through his investment company, Rank Group, he acquired many packaging and consumer goods companies. His acquisitions include Carter Holt Harvey, SIG Combibloc, and Reynolds Packaging Group.

Hart's business strategy revolves around leveraged buyouts (LBOs), acquiring undervalued companies with steady cash flows. He restructures operations to enhance profitability, implements cost-cutting measures, and utilizes debt financing for acquisitions. Hart's strategic approach has proven remarkably successful, transforming underperforming companies into profitable ventures. Philanthropy
Hart is known for his private lifestyle and prefers to stay out of the media. He has made significant donations to various causes, including education and disaster relief. In 2018, the Hart Family made a $10 million donation to the University of Otago to go towards opening their dental teaching facility in South Auckland. In February 2022, Hart donated eight tractors, 30 fishing boats and a container of food to the people of Tonga following the 2022 Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai eruption and tsunami. He donated a total of NZ$700,000 to right-wing political parties in New Zealand's 2023 general election.
